Hickory Wind

words and music by Gram Parsons and Bob Buchanan

One of the first recording sessions for the Sense Of Purpose album had drawn to a close one afternoon, a little earlier than planned. As Sam was in such good voice and there was about an hour to kill, Ez persuaded him and their sound engineer / session musician Paul Adshead to record three cover songs acoustically, all of which had been included in the repertoire of Sam and Paul's duo Coxx. Hickory Wind by The Byrds was one of these, the other two being Buddy Holly's Learning The Game, and Jesamine by The Bystanders, but made famous by The Casuals.

Overdubs were carried out by Ez and Paul at a later date. Learning The Game became a digital single and is included on the Collection compilation album. Hickory Wind and Jesamine were completed for inclusion on the Memory Lane boxset. An earlier, pop rock version of Jesamine in a higher key was also included on Collection.

These recordings serve as fine examples of how Detours approach cover versions, creating their own arrangements, and how Sam Johnson approaches cover versions as a singer, very much in his own style, making the song his own rather than immitating.
